Work package title | AI-Human Collaboration |
Objectives To investigate and establish frameworks for how AI can complement human research in historical studies, focusing on ancient and medieval history |
Description of work WP3 will develop frameworks for AI to augment human research capabilities in historical studies. This will involve creating models that can process and interpret large historical datasets to assist in the analysis of primary written sources, artifacts, and archaeological sites. The work will assess the AI’s ability to understand and analyze complex historical narratives and contexts, with a goal to provide supportive tools for historians. The work package will also address the ethical dimensions of AI-human collaboration, ensuring that AI tools are developed with a sensitivity to cultural and historical nuances. This includes ensuring that AI algorithms are free of cultural and personal biases, and that their deployment in historical research adheres to the principles of trustworthy AI. To facilitate this, WP3 will host collaborative work sessions, bringing together AI developers, historians, and ethicists to discuss and refine the AI tools and methodologies. The interdisciplinary dialogue will be critical for ensuring that the AI tools developed are scientifically robust, ethically sound, and practically useful for researchers in the field. The lead participant for WP3 is UNISAEN with a commitment of the Post-Doc AI Site Project Director, 3 Pre-Doc AI Developers, and a Senior Collaborator. Collaborating participants include Partner 4-Policy/Ethics, UA, UC3M, and CSIC, each contributing expertise and resources to ensure the work package’s objectives are met. These contributions include policy and ethics oversight, historical and archaeological expertise, and collaborative development efforts. The deliverables for WP3 will include a comprehensive report detailing the AI’s capabilities, limitations, and the frameworks established for historical research. The interdisciplinary and collaborative approach outlined in WP3 will ensure that the URRACA project not only advances the field of historical studies through the application of AI but does so with a commitment to ethical and responsible research practices.
